90 October 26, 1999 Spec Boats for a Strong Market
Demand for medium size push boats on the inland waterways has shown steady growth recently. In recognition of this market, Hope Services of Dulac Louisiana have built two 72x30-foot vessels on spec. Each boat is powered by a pair of 12-cylinder Cummins KTA38 M0 engines rated for 1000 HP at 1800 RPM. The engines turn into Twin Disc 5301 gears with 6:1 reduction. The 73x58-inch four-blade stainless propellers are mounted on six-inch stainless shafts. Electrical needs are met by a pair of Cummins 6B series powered 50 Kw gen sets. Accommodation on the 2000 HP tugs is provided for seven people in four staterooms. With a molded depth of 10 feet, the hull holds tankage for 20,000 gallons of fuel, 10,000 gallons of potable water and 10,000 gallons of fresh water as well as ballast tanks. Steering and flanking rudders are controlled through a Skipper hydraulic system. The air engine controls are by Kobelt. A pair of Nabrico electric-over-hydraulic deck winches handle the 1.25-inch face wires. This is the fourteenth tow boat built on this well proven hull design by Hope Services who are also building a Cummins KTA38-powered 136-foot utility boat.
