"This order will make over 150 Cummins powered shrimp boats that Jack Sahlman has ordered for his fleet," says Cummins Alabama, Vice President for Marine Marketing Larry Neff, "They were fishing in a wide range of countries but now they have brought the fleet down to 54 boats based in Georgetown, Guiana." Steiner is also working on the second of a four boat KT19-powered order for a consortium of U.S. and foreign owners who will fish the boats in French Guiana. These 80X24X11.5-foot vessels are being built to Bureau Veritas standards. They are also equipped with full processing capablities in the main deck house. These will include quick freezing, grading and packaging for export to Europe. All processing is being done to French and European standards so that product will be ready for export when landed. Packaged product will be stowed aboard in a 3400-cu.ft. hold. Joe Rodriguez reports that his family's yard is building a 90X24 foot shrimper for a family member. "We are boat builders, but we have found this to be a good way to keep our shipyard crews working. We have done this in the past -- the boats are for sale but they make money for us in the meantime," explains Rodriguez. The Cummins-powered boat currently under construction is equipped with Le Blanc refrigeration and will be capable of quick-freezing and storing 1000 boxes of product weighing 100,000 pounds. Ship service power is supplied by a Cummins/Onan. The KTA19 M-3 main engine generates 600 hp at 1800 RPM and provides plenty of towing power for the trawl. The engine drives the prop through a ZF gear, while on the front of the engine an air clutch controls the power take-off.
