86 September 9, 1999 Blessey Prepares to Christen M/V Doug Barker On Friday September 17 Blessey Marine Services newest vessel, the 78x28x10.6-foot, M/V Dough Barker will moor near the Hilton Hotel at the Foot of New Orleans's historic Poydras Street for a Christening ceremony. Built at the Verrete Shipyard in Plaquemine Louisiana, the new vessel is the first of several to be delivered to the rapidly growing towboat operating company from various yards over the coming months. The "Doug Baker" is powered by a pair of 12-cylinder Cummins KTA38 M2 main engines delivering 1000 HP each at 1800 RPM to Reintjes model WAF561 gears with a ratio of 5.947:1 turning 7-inch AS steel shafts and 74x58-inch propellers. Electrical needs will be met by a pair of Cummins powered 75Kw gen sets. Intended for work on the Mississippi River system the three decked vessel has the wheelhouse elevated an additional five feet to provide 32-foot wheelhouse visibility while gaining usable space under the wheelhouse. The boat will push a pair of Blessey's 30,000 barrel black oil and asphalt barges. Editors and writers able to attend the Christening ceremony are invited to contact: Steve Proehl For other Cummins Hotips regarding Blessey boats see Hotips#38 and #62 525-501, 500-476, 475-451, 450-426, 425-401, 400-376 |
