Built in 1974, the 91-foot M/V Ann Peters is enjoying the long life that is the norm for freshwater vessels. With no salt in her system the hull plating and framing retains its strength. But she narrowly escaped her demise when hurricane Katrina pushed her up on the levee at New Orleans. Welders, working to attach pad-eyes to help return her to the water, sparked some fuel and a fire broke out and the good boat was severely damaged.

Ingram Barge Lines purchased the damaged vessel and the process of refurbishing her began in 2007. Her new owners gutted the hull and removed the old fire-ruined engines. They chose a pair of Cummins to carry her for the next few decades.

With the towboat alongside at Paducah Kentucky, the old engines, along with the old piping and wiring, were stripped from the hull. The pair of Cummins Tier 2 compliant QSK50 engines, each rated for 1600 hp at 1800 RPM, are coupled to Twin Disc MG 5600 gears. Mark Duley of Ingram Barge Lines reports that the company will operate the engines at 1200 hp each as that is optimum for this vessel. The main engines are resiliently mounted to minimize sound levels in the newly refurbished accommodation areas.

In addition to the new mains the Ann Peters received a pair of new Cummins 6BTA5.9-D(M) 80 kw generators sets.

First launched from the LeMay Barge & Supply yard, the totally refurbished 91x32-foot boat is now back in service with on her regular runs up and down the Ohio and Mississippi River.
