The Guangdong Machinery Import & Export Co. Ltd. (GMG) has been coordinating the supply and delivery of a wide range of China-built products since 1950. With current volumes in the USD $400 to 500 million range the firm is involved in a wide range of activities including shipbuilding.

The ability of a firm like GMG to organize the logistics of assembling the complex of components from steel to electronics required for a modern tug is an important asset. The shortage of marine supplies can be a major challenge for shipyards worldwide.

However, speaking to rumours of a short supply of marine engines, Cummins Marine General Manager Geoff Conrad explained, “Cummins has planned for an increasing supply of marine diesels for 2009. We work very closely with our global distributors and our customers to understand needs for all engines. This has been the practice for five years now. We have a known supply of engines in 2009 and have good flexibility for projects that may be unknown to us.”

With their Cummins engine orders well placed, GMG continues to build their very successful 36x10.4-meter multi-purpose vessels. Powered by a pair of Cummins KTA50 M2 main engines producing 1600 hp each at 1800 RPM turning fixed pitch propellers in Kort nozzles through Reintjes 5.95:1 gears, the vessels have a greater than 40-ton bollard pull. A pair of Cummins-powered 240 Kw generators provides electrical power for the vessel including its HRP3T bow thruster.

Tankage on the BV-classed under 500 GRT boat includes about 350 cubic meters of fuel oil and 100 cubic meters of potable water. Life saving and fire fighting are in keeping with SOLAS requirements. Crew accommodation includes two one-person, one two-person and three four-person cabins.

GMG Project Manager Lin Fuxuan reports that three of these vessels have been delivered and four more are under construction. Prices are “under US four million dollar range depending on the exchange rate and final customer requirements.”

To date vessels have been delivered through a Singapore firm to a Holland Shipowner, Al Jaber Shipping Agency and Marine Works LLC, UAE and Sealantic FZE Co., UAE.
