513 July 2008 Four Tugs for Thong Yong International
Growing from small beginnings in 1981 as a ships' chandler, Thong Yong has grown to a large international operation with a continuing presence in servicing ships but also a fleet of tugs and other interests. The Singapore-based Thong Yong Marine Group (www.tym-group.com) now has subsidiaries in Malaysia, Indonesia and Dubai UAE.
To meet demands they are currently expanding their fleet with four new tugs from SL Shipbuilding Contracting Sdn. Bhd. in Sibu, Sarawak East Malaysia. The four sisterships, being built at SL Shipbuilding in Sibu, East Malaysia, are 31 by 28.13 meters (101.68x29.52 feet) with a 4-meter molded depth. The first two will be named Kida, Oshu, Uta and Yori the vessels will follow in quick succession with the Kida already launched. Each vessel will be powered by a pair of Cummins KTA38M-M2 for a total of 2400 hp and turning into Reintjes WAF-562L gears with 5.947:1 ratios and turning four blade propellers in Kort nozzles.
On deck a 30 ton towing winch with a 100 ton brake will be supplemented by a 30-ton towing hook. Electrical power will be supplied by a pair of Cummns 6BT5.9D (M)-powered 80 kW electrical generators. Fuel will be carried in tanks totaling 235 cubic meters while 33 cubic meters of tankage will be provided for fresh water. Accommodation will be provided for up to 15 persons.
