507 July 2008 New Towboat Company for Louisiana
“We are just now setting up our offices and base on 14.5 acres in Amelia Louisiana,” explained Dennis Mahaffey on a cell phone from a shipyard where he was inspecting an oil barge. With nearly 20 years working for various companies in the movement of crude oil around South Louisiana, Mahaffey is excited about the new firm Great White Towing LLC.
As President and General Manager Mahaffey will be overseeing the company’s fleet of three brand new 52x22-foot pusher boats. Named the Great White 1, 2 and 3 the boats were built at the Serodino Shipyard in Chattanooga Tennessee. The first two have 600 hp Cummins KTA19 M3 engines while the Great White 3, that delivered in June, has a pair of Tier 2 compliant Cummins QSK19 M3 mains with the same ratings. All three vessels employ Twin Disc MG5222DC gears with 4.03:1 ratios. Electrical generators are also Cummins powered. Mahaffey explains that the primary function of the company will be the transport of crude oil from production wells in the near shore fields to the producers’ shore side depots. Each of the handy sized new towboats will push a standard double-skinned 195x35x10-foot barge with a 10,000-barrel capacity. 575-551 |
