Cummins Power for Taiwanese Navy Tugs

Cummins Marine is proud to announce the sale of main and auxiliary engines for a new series of Z-drive tugs for the Taiwanese (ROC) Navy. The tugs, with a beam of eight meters on a length of 28.8 meters, will have a molded depth of 3.8 meters and a 2.6 meter draft. Main engines will be a pair of Cummins V-12 KTA38M2 each engine rated for continuous duty 1200 hp at 1800 rpm. The main engines will drive a pair of Ulstein 650H Z-drive steerable rudder propeller systems for a design speed of ten knots. This model drive is rated for up to 800 Kw with its 1575 m/m (62-inch) prop. Input to the prop will be at 1800 RPM the reduction in the Z-drive taking this down to a 428 RPM prop rotation. A PTO in the Z-drives upper gear box powers the hydraulic steering pump and clutch. While the Cummins KTA38M2 engines will both turn the same way, gearing in the Z-drive will convert one so that the two props will be counter rotating and outboard turning when viewed from the stern. Bollard pull for the 2400 HP tugs will be about 23 tons.

Building at the Ching Fu Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in Kaoshiung, Taiwan, the first of the vessels is scheduled for delivery in July 1999. Engines for the first two will be delivered in January 1999 with engines for two more tugs, of what is expected to be an eight vessel project, in February of 1999. Ships service power will be two Cummins/Onan 120MXDGEA / 120 kw at 60 hz.
