Candy Factory Delivered by Swifships

Staggered engine placement makes for a room engine space.

The third of four in a series, the 175 by 30-foot Candy Factory, did sea trials in early December prior to the handover from Swiftshps also of Morgan City. Running light the new boat achieved an average speed of 31 knots. This hull design has evolved over the years to employ a deep-V on the entry that gives an exceptionally comfortable ride in heavy weather. All of the vessels in this series are jets. Candy Fleet reports that with the jets shipyard visits are drastically reduced.

The company assigned Capt. Robert Presson and Chief Engineer Lee Sorrells to the vessel as they had experience on the two sisters, Candy Barrel and Candy Counter. Chief Engineer Sorrells likes the staggered layout of the four Cummins KTA 38 M1 main engines. The 1350 HP engines are arrangement with one outboard and one inboard engine mounted several feet forward of the other two allowing excellent service access. The Hamilton HM651 jets are mounted across the transom so the engines are set on a more level plane that would be the case with propellers and their fore and aft location is determined only by the length of the drive shafts. The boat’s two Cummins-powered 125 kW generators are set up in a room aft of the main engine room which keeps the weight of the mains well forward in the hull. “It improves the ride in rough seas and lets us get up on the step faster,” said Sorrells.

Candy Factory forward controls
The forward controls include four joy sticks for the Hamilton jets and a single joy stick for integrated operation.

To further enhance the crewboat’s sea keeping characteristics her tankage (5,800 gallons of fuel, 17,000 transferable fuel, 24,800 gallons of water) are also set forward. Additional tanks for 12,200 gallons of ballast water can be adjusted for load and sea conditions. The 105 by 24-foot open after deck has capacity for 200 long tons. Seating is provided for 60 passengers.
