With Gulf Coast shipyards backlogged on orders, Houma Louisiana based Caillou IslandTowing recently took delivery of a like-new boat that arose phoenix like from the charred remainsof a 16 year old hull. "We replaced ribs and hull plating," says company operations manager RoryDupre, "and totally rebuild the house. It is basically a brand new boat." For power, the company chose a pair of six-cylinder Cummins KTA 19M engines turningshallow pitched 62X42-inch open wheels. The 1200 hp tug is 62X24 feet and carries a full slate ofSimrad electronics in the wheelhouse including radar, auto pilot, and a GPS/Loran combination.With accommodation for six she has been involved with inland rig moving and off shore pipebarge movements since her relaunch in 1997. She is equipped with electric deck winches forrigging face wires to push equipment and H-bitts aft for soft line towing of barges. "We areadding a Smatco deck winch above the H-bitts, in the event that we get some anchor handlingwork," Dupre says, "we will have around 1200 feet of inch-and-a-quarter wire in place of the 300feet of three-inch poly rope that we had on the H-bitts."
