40 Wahl Launches Crab Boat Following on his highly successful Cummins N14-powered, 98-foot Vixen (Hotips#21) launched earlier this year, Fred Wahl Marine Construction, Inc. of Reedsport, Oregon is preparing for sea trials on the firm's latest vessel, the Sandra Five. With the Vixen back from the Alaskan crab grounds and alongside at the yard rigging for tuna, the larger 113'5"X31-foot Sandra Five will be equipped as a salmon tender and crabber. Designed by Seattle naval architect Hal Hockema, she has a molded depth to the main deck of 11 feet and a displacement on the summer load line of 662.76 long tons. For the bigger boat, Fred Wahl went up five liters in engine volume to a pair of the long-favored Cummins KTA19-M marine engines rated at 500 hp @ 1800 RPM. The engines, supplied by Curry Marine of Newport Oregon, drive through Twin Disc MG516 5.04:1 marine gears. For her northern work, the Sandra Five has three wet fish holds for a total volume of 6,501 cubic feet. Bait for the pots will be carried in a 770 cu.ft. bait freezer. The boat has tankage for 33,192 gallons of fuel, 463 gallons each of lube and hydraulic oil, 379 gallons each of waste oil and sewage, 6,930 gallons of fresh water and 4,359 gallons of ballast water. With limited new construction on the U.S. Pacific coast this could well be the largest fishing vessel built there in 1998. Add in the Fred Wahl Marine Construction reputation for quality, this will be, as veteran engine man Tom Curry says, "A real nice lookin' boat."
