389 October 2006 Korean Auxiliary Business Continues Strong
As Korean shipyards continue to turn out a range of deep-sea ships, Cummins generator sets and auxiliary engines enjoy strong demand. Recent Korean projects include five product tanker vessels from STX Shipbuilding currently under construction for their affiliated company STX Pan Ocean. Main propulsion for these vessels are MAN B&W with each ship also equipped with two 620 hp Cummins KTA19DM engines for cargo pump drives. Another five-vessel order is being filled by Samsung Heavy Industries. These are 145,000 cubic meter LNG carriers. Powered by steam turbines, these modern vessels are fitted with Cummins VTA28DM 500 Kw emergency generator sets. The BV-classed ships are being built for MISC (Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad. MISC ( MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING CORPORATION BERHAD).
According to Cummins Korea spokesman, Peter Kim, Korean shipbuilders have taken orders for 133 units of LNG vessels representing about 74% of the total worldwide demand of 179 units in the 2002 to 2006 time period. Of these 133 units, Cummins has a 60 to 65% share of the emergency generator sets. Many of these vessels are larger than the 145,000 cubic meter vessels mentioned above and so are installing 700~1200kW emergency gensets powered by Cummins KTA38, KTA50 and QSK 60 engines. Kim explains that experts predict that there will be another 170 LNG vessels ordered by 2010 and that the capacity of these ships will continue to grow.
