388 October 12, 2006 Cummins Mid-South Providing Auxiliaries Their main propulsion engines have dominated some significant sectors of the Gulf Coast shipbuilding industry. Now Cummins Mid-South is gaining large orders in some newer markets. Heavy oil main engines will power the latest vessel in the Crowley Martime “Reliance” series of ATBs that is currently building at V T Halter Marine in Mississippi, The diesel auxiliaries for both the barges and tugs are supplied by Cummins Mid-South. These include Tier II QSK50DM gen set rated 1100KW @ 1800 RPM for the barges and the Tier II QSK19DM engines for the 425KW gen sets for the tugs. A smaller Tier II 6CTA8.3DM engine will drive the tug's 105KW Emergency gen set. Meanwhile at Eastern Shipbuilding a DP2 platform supply vessel is being built for Harvey Gulf with three KTA38M2 engines, each generating 1200 hp at 1800 RPM, providing power for the 280-foot vessel's two bow thrusters and single stern thruster. In addition the Harvey Gulf boat has three KTA19 DM-powered generator sets and a single Cummins 6CTA8.3DM-powered emergency gen set. Also building at Eastern Shipbuilding is a tug for Guidry Brothers that will have a Cummins KTA38 MO thruster engine rated for 850 hp @ 1800 RPM and one Cummins 6BTA5.9 DM-powered 85 Kw emergency gen set. Note the letters in the above engine names denote the following: K, C & B are all engine series designations; T denotes turbocharged, A denotes after cooled, M denotes marine and D shows the engine is for generator set application. The QSK engines are the new generation electronically controlled engines. The numbers that follow the engine series letters such as 50, 38, 19, 8.3 and 5.6 define the engine's displacement in liters. The 6 in front of the C & B series engines indicates the number of cylinders. For further information: 575-551 |
