Welsh Firm Continues Successful Series

Holyhead Towing have taken delivery of the third of the Afon Alaw series shallow draft AHT.  Delivered by Hepworth Shipyard earlier this year the Afon Caradog is Llayds Classed and keeps with the company practice of naming the tugs after rivers on the Island of Anglesey in Wales, where the company is based. The new boat, at 26.8 meters in length, is 1.3 meters longer than the two earlier vessels although it retains the same 9-meter beam and 3.6-meter molded depth. All three vessels have a relatively shallow working draft of 2.4 (minimum) making them well suited for both off shore and near shore work.

The two earlier vessels are continuing on contract in the Caspian Sea while the new Afon Caradog is currently working on the dismantling and salvage of the CP Valour that has been aground at Faial in the Azores since December 2005. This shot of the Afton Caradog on the salvage job in the Azores was
supplied by the owners.

The new vessel has the same propulsion package as her sister vessels, comprised of a pair of Cummins KTA38 M2 main engines delivering a total of 2600 bhp through ZF gear boxes to propellers in kort nozzles with high lift rudders. This combination gives the tug a 34-tonne bollard pull. A pair of Cummins powered diesel hydraulic packs are also onboard. The accommodation sleeps 12 and the Afon Caradog is extremely well fitted out to assist with marine construction jobs. Equipment includes a double drum anchor handling and towing winch with 500 meter by 44 mm wire (with working wire) plus an additional ten tonne tugger winch and a 3.5-meter stern roller with hydraulic tow pins; a spare towing wire is stored on a powered reel in the hold. A long reach 90 ton/metre hydraulic knuckle-boom is mounted aft plus a  40 tonne A-frame can be mounted aft if required.
