Canadian Yard Building Crowther Design Catamaran

Computer generated rendering of the new boat in Westcoast Launch colours.

Doug and Debbie Davis own West Coast Launch www.westcoastlaunch.com
and operate three launches carrying people out beyond the roads along the rugged northern British Columbia coastline out of their homeport of Prince Rupert. “We take the pilots out to the ships and the school kids into town,” says Debbie of the backbone of their business. With the increase in Alaska-bound cruise ship visits they fouind that their largest boat, the 58-foot 38-passenger Georgia Master, wasn't able to meet the demand for wilderness tours. They have now ordered a 100 passenger Crowther-designed 72 by 24.5-foot catamaran to be built at Sylte Shipyard on the Fraser River near Vancouver.

The new boat, to be named Inside Passage, will be a dramatic addition to the Prince Rupert waterfront and the north coast. Using the same power package as two similar vessels building at Kvichak in Seattle Washington ( see Hotips#379 ), the boat will have a pair of Cummins QSK19 M electronic controlled tier I compliant engines each producing 800 hp @ 2100 RPM with in a medium continuous duty rating. The engines will turn 5-blade propellers through ZF 665 gears to give the new catamaran a 27-knot speed.

Delivery is scheduled for the spring of 2007 in time to take advantage of the new cruise season. With her aluminum hull painted a bright yellow to match the other boats in the West Coast Launch fleet, the new vessel, named in their honour, will be welcomed by the waters of British Columbia's spectacular Inside Passage.
