371 July 2006 Unique Vessel In Hong Kong
Some call it an “adventure ship” others call it a “sailing junk” but regardless of its category the 34.5-meter Jockey Club Huan stands out in the crowded Hong Kong harbour. Built by Choi Lee's Hin Lee (Zuhai) Shipyard to a design by the British firm Three Quays Ltd., the aluminium-hulled three-master was delivered in February of this year and replaces the wooden hulled vessel Huan. Owned by a registered charitable organization, it is handicapped accessible and carries youth on cruises in Hong Kong waters. The huge sheltered main deck, provided by the boat's eight-meter beam, contains fold away three tier bunks for up to 62 passengers and several crewmembers. A well-equipped aft-located wheelhouse includes skipper's accommodation and a flying bridge. Interior and exterior decks are wood clad to yacht standards. The three masts carry large junk style sails that will sail the craft although a pair of Cummins 6CTA 8.3 engines each producing 300 hp (255 Kw) turning through ZF gears with 2.25:1 reduction, drive the boat at nine knots. On sail power alone the boat can make five knots. A 55 ton concrete-filled keel provides stability under sail.
A pair of Cummins Onan gen sets, one 75 kw and one 45 kW, provide for the ship's electrical needs. The Hong Kong Jockey Club provided funding for the vessel. For further information:
