37 May 24,1998 Canadians Demonstrate Marine Technology on European Tour
The Canadian ice breaker "Louis St.Laurent" will be demonstrating a wide range ofCanadian Marine technologies at European ports during the month of June 1998. Travelling asdeck cargo on board the ship will be a 45X16.8-foot fibreglass fishing boat. Built to the traditionand quality of the great wooden hulled Nova Scotian schooners that traded into Europe in the 19thCentury, this modern semi-planing hull is expected to attract considerable attention. The boat is a representative forward house design with the large open cockpit favored inAtlantic Canada for a broad range of fisheries. Marketed by DDS Export Limited, a joint projectof two well know Acadian boat builders, Camille Deon Boat Builders Ltd. and Dixon ShipyardsLtd., the boat includes compact accommodation for four crew. With weight kept to a minimumthrough such techniques as Nida-Core decks, the hull is built to rugged commercial structural specifications. Power will come from a Cummins new N-14 engine equipped with the optional pre-lubesystem. Based on the long proven Cummins 855, this compact marine engine has won animmediate following on all three North American coasts with intallations in the 100-foot "Spirit ofCharleston" dinner cruise vessel on the Atlantic coast, J.W.P. Boat Rentals in 49-foot crew boaton the Gulf of Mexico and Fred Wahl's 98-foot crabber "Vixen" on the Pacific coast. While thosethree boats are twin engine, the Dixon 45 will be powered by a single Cummins N-14 with thehighest rating currently available at 525 hp. Speeds in will be in excess of 20-knots. At each stop the Dixon 45 will be off loaded to allow demonstrations in the local waters. The Louis S.
