Lightering Containers in Hong Kong

One of the most remarkable features of the Hong Kong harbour for European of American mariners is the extensive use made of lightering of cargos, particularly containers. With most of the pier side cranes in heavy demand there is a need for lightering containers to shore, but more significant is the need to deliver and ship containers to and from the Pearl River ports of Guangdong province that will not accommodate the deep drafts of modern ships.

Crane barges lifting the containers to and from smaller vessels do most of the lightering. The Guangzhou Panyu Shanghai Shipyard Co. Ltd. delivered two modern lightering vessels in July 2006. Named M/V Zhu Chuan 2001 and Zhu Chuan 2002, each vessel has a capacity of 118 TEU (20-foot equivalent units) in its beamy hull.

A pair of 500 hp Cummins KTA19 M2 engines located in an engine room well aft under an accommodation cabin provides propulsive power. Two Cummins-powered 58 kW generators meet the vessel's electrical needs. A well-equipped but spartan wheelhouse is located ahead of the large open cargo area.
