Big Pull, Shallow Draft Tug for Huey L. Cheramie, Inc.

Rusty Gisclair, Jr. is pleased with the new boat that his boss Huey Cheramie is having built at the Portier Shipyard on Bayou Petite Caillou, near Houma, Louisiana. "We got Mr. Frank, to round off the wheelhouse a bit and she is going to be a real good looking boat," he said on a yard visit this past May. "Mr. Frank" is Frank J. Basile, P.E. who has had dozens of tugs built to his designs over the half century since he graduated from New Orleans' Tulane University.

The new 80X26-foot model bow tug will be powered by three of Cummins KTA19 engines swinging 59-inch wheels in 60-inch type 37 Kort nozzles. By going to three engines and propellers, the owners will get a boat with the same thrust as a larger engined twin screw boat while drawing about 1.5 feet less water. Working in and out of ports around the shallow bays and bayous of southern Louisiana this can be a real asset.

I have a photo of the boat under construction and plated up at the yard. There is no paint on the boat but her attractive lines are well defined. Running shots should be available from the owners after sea trials sometime in August. If, in the meantime, you would like the "work in progress" shot, please contact me.
