263 July 23, 2004 Singapores Pan-United Shipping Moves Up In Power
When they saw an article in a trade journal on Cummins KTA38-powered tugs building in China a couple of years ago (see Cummins Hotips 173), the people at Pan-United Shipping in Singapore made a couple of calls. After a visit to the Guangzhou Panyu Lingshan Shipyard on the Pear River in Southern China, they ordered two boats powered by 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50 M2 engines. The company already had a 2400 HP boat powered by the 12-cylinder KTA38 engines and its success in ocean towing made the choice of the larger KTA50s relatively simple. The KTA50 M2 engines each produce 1600 HP at 1800 RPM.
This past June 25 the new boats did their sea trails in China and proved satisfactory. The ABS-classed 30x9-meter vessels will join the three other owned, as well as 20 chartered, Pan United Shipping tugs towing 320x90-foot barges tramping through out Southeast Asian waters. Named PU 3201,and PU 3202, the 3200 HP tugs are equipped with a single drum towing winch and a pair of Cummins 6BTA5.9 80 Kw generator sets. Tankage includes 280 cubic meters for fuel oil and 50 cubic meters for fresh water. Accommodation is provided for up to 12 crew members. With a 3.4-metre draft the new boat will have a displacement of approximately 615 tons.
