250 Rhode Island Yard Completes Cummins Repower Paul Baker, General Manager at Rhode Islands Promet Marine, reports that their new 400 metric tonne travel lift handled the haulout and relaunch earlier this month of the off shore lobster boat Nathaniel Lee. The boat was having a new Cummins KTA19 M3 installed. Rated for 500 HP at 1800 RPM the engine turns a 64x48-inch propeller through a Twin Disc MG516 gear with a 5:1 ratio. The 24-year old 80x24x12-foot Nathaniel Lee was an easy job for the big travel lift that can accommodate boats up to 32 feet on the beam and 440 short tons. Promet Marine hauls between 200 and 225 fish boat per year. The firm has had to make significant changes since their founding in 1974. At that time they were doing voyage repairs and servicing ships with mobile crews, when the industry shifted to tug and barge traffic in the 1980s, they had to become more versatile. They qualified as navy suppliers but when the Navy moved out of New England in 1993 they were again faced with a challenge. To meet this, they added a 300-ton travel lift allowing then to serve a broad range of fishing boats, tugs, and commuter boats from Cape May, New Jersey to Maine. The 300-ton lift wasnt quite big enough for the full range of heavier tugs that they wanted to haul so they have traded it for the 400-metric tonne lift. They haul vessels at their ship yard in Providence RI while continuing with a growing conversion and repair business, pier-side, on large commercial vessels such as barges, cable layers and bulk freighters. Promet has found a niche to supplement its original work of repairs to commercial vessels heading into New England ports. Meantime, lobster fisherman David Spencer has a refurbished lobster boat heading for the grounds. For more information contact: Paul Baker Mel Molgard 575-551 |
