New Aft-House Design From Newfoundland Yard

Heralded as "the first in the New Revolution series" from Newfoundland’s Universal Marine, the Elite Voyager is being readied for her March 15 delivery date. At 60 by 22 feet, she is from a GRP hull mould that can be stretched up to 100 feet. "We decided that it was a good way to go for the accommodation down aft and with the bulbous bow this will be a more comfortable boat in the sea," explains Wayne Collins, who with his four brothers-in-law, Sean, Ted, Basil and Gary Penton, own the boat through their company Pencol Enterprises Ltd.

Sean is the company president and the boat’s captain. "Our Dad started us out with a small 50-foot boat over 30 years ago, and we worked our way up to this," he says.

With a "walk-through" on the main deck that opens aft under the wheelhouse and captain’s stateroom, the galley and quarters for up to eight crew are below deck in the aft hull, forward of that is the fish hold with the engine room forward of the fish-hold. A small foc’sle area accommodates the hydraulics. The bulbous bow is separated from the rest of the hull by a watertight bulkhead and can be used for ballasting to the vessel’s trim. A 50 HP bow thruster is also located forward.

There is no question this is a "fisherman’s boat" designed to handle rugged conditions in a fishery that includes seals, shrimp trawl, crab pots and haddock gillnetting. Her big forward hold, built into the vessel’s 10-foot molded depth, will accommodate about 150,000 pounds of wet fish or 600 boxes each holding about 50 pounds of crab in ice or 70 to 80 pounds of shrimp. Power for this beamy hard fishing vessel is the Cummins KTA19. This sturdy six-cylinder in-inline block has gained legendary status for reliability in fishing boats from the North Sea to the Bering Sea, Hong Kong and virtually anywhere that small fishing boats put out to sea.

On the Elite Voyager the 640 HP @ 1800 RPM M3 version of this engine has an enhanced bollard pull with the addition of a speed nozzle on her nearly square 63.25 x 62-inch prop. Turned through a ZF Marine gear model W650 with a 5.138:1 ratio there will be ample power for towing the 1500 trawl net with its head rope of about 130 feet. The shrimp trawl will be retrieved onto the upper deck aft of the wheelhouse were 5 to 6,000 pounds can be graded and sorted at a time. Trawl winches and net drum are also located there. A five-ton knuckle crane is also located forward. Crab pots and haddock gillnets will retrieve forward into the 900 square foot enclosed shelter deck. Sean Penton points out that the aft house makes the big working deck possible in that it extends back under the superstructure.

Tankage on the Elite Voyager includes 3500 gallons of fuel, 600 gallons of water and 200 gallons of hydraulic oil. The boat is fitted with 24.9 Kw and 13.5 Kw generator sets. Her initial launch is scheduled for Monday March 1 with final fitting out and sea trials to follow.
