229 Savannah Pilots Order Cummins Power for Carmac/Kvichak Boat
In early 2002 the Savannah Pilots of Savannah, Georgia repowered one of their boats with Cummins engines. "They worked for us so we stayed with Cummins for the new boat," explained Savannah Pilots Association president Capt. Tommy Browne. (see Cummins Hotips#166 at www.Haig-Brown.com ) The new boat in this case is a 78-foot Carmac-designed pilot boat to be built at Kvichak Marine Industries in Seattle. Main engines for the vessel will be a pair of Cummins KTA38 M2 engines rated for 1350 HP each at 1900 RPM in a heavy duty rating. The engines will power Hamilton 651 waterjets through ZF2550 marine gears. With a fuel capacity of 1250 US gallons the vessel will have a 205-nautical mile range and a design speed in the range of 28 knots. This propulsion, in the hull with an overall length of 78 feet 2 inches and a beam of 21 feet 5 inches, will give the all aluminum vessel excellent sea keeping and manoeuverability characteristics. "After extensive investigation, the Camarc pilot boat was chosen to improve our existing fleet," said Capt. Browne. "Our new boat will operate in calm to turbulent seas and we felt this design best serves our needs in terms of safety, speed and outfitting." Scheduled for an August 2004 delivery, the boat is designed by Camarc, Ltd of the United Kingdom and will be the fourth boat in the pilots fleet.. As described in a media release from Kvichak (see www.kvichak.com ) it is "the seventh pilot boat Carmac, Kvichak and Derector Shipyards, of New York have partnered on to design and built for U.S. pilot associations. The Camarc-Derecktor-Kvichak team was organized to offer their unrivalled experience n the design and construction of high quality, dependable aluminum vessels for pilotage operations. Typically, Kvichak constructs Camarc-designed vessels west of the Mississippi River and Derecktor constructs those on the east side. However due to Derecktors current production schedule Kvichak is constructing the boat for Savannah." Rendering is courtesy of Kvichak Marine Industries. For further information: Capt. W.
