225 Sibu: Home of the Fast River Ferries
Sibu is a small city of about 200,000 people and 35 shipyards located 130 kilometres up Sarawaks Rejang River in Borneo, East Malaysia. Access to most towns and villages along this great river is by boat. A form of single-hulled high speed craft has evolved locally to meet these needs. Built in both steel and more recently, aluminum, the river boats feature a round chine shallow draft design with bottom plating extended aft allowing the engine to be mounted further aft to maximize passenger spaces.
A fine example of the river boats is Mr. Ting Heng Sings newly delivered Asian Vision which operates out of the new ferry terminal in Sibu. Powered by a Cummins KTA38 main engine with a heavy duty rating of 1300 HP, it among the more powerful and faster vessels on the river, although still larger, twin engined versions, are employed in the run down river and across the open South China Sea to the capital of Sarawak at Kuching.
