221 Cummins-Powered Crowther-Design for Hong Kong Ferry Operator
Cheoy Lees Hin Lee (Zhuhai) Shipyard in Guangdong province of the PRC is building a pair of 26-metre catamarans for Hong Kong ferry operator Park Island Transport Company Limited. With an 8.5-metre beam over all, the two vessels are all aluminum construction and will carry 223 passengers with a crew of five. The boats are designed by Crowther Design of Australia, as were a pair of 28-metre 403-passenger FRP catamarans delivered from the same yard to Hong Kong earlier this year. Each of the catamarans 2.3-metre-wide hulls will hold a Cummins KTA38-M2 engine. These V-12 cylinder four-stroke engines produce a continuous duty 1200 HP (895 Kw) at a conservative 1800 RPM. Long proven in Gulf of Mexico oil industry crew boats these engines are considered "bullet proof" by many operators. The original specifications on the Park Island boats called for a pair of lighter weight 1000 HP engines to give a 25-knot design speed. However, subsequent consultation saw this changed to the higher horsepower Cummins engines. Although this meant an increase in weight, the additional 200 HP would still deliver the design speed. "Given the heavy use and 18-hour operation days that these ferries will get in Hong Kong we felt this was a good option that would still deliver the specified speed," explained Henry Lo, the yards managing director, "We like to act as a team with all concerned to satisfy each customers needs." The first set of engines for the new boats was delivered to the yard at the end of May with the second set to follow in early June. The boats are expected to be delivered to their Hong Kong owners in September and November of this year.
