203 Cummins Auxiliary Power for New Tanker
In keeping with a growing number of European built coastal cargo vessels, a new build from a Turkish shipyard for a British owner also features Cummins-powered generator sets. The oil tanker Whitchallenger was delivered in October, 2002 from Gemak Shipbuilding Industry and Trading, S.A. of Istanbul Turkey. The 84.9 x 15 x 8.6-metre vessel has joined the fleet of John H. Whitaker (Tankers) Ltd. of the UK. Cargo holds total 4682 cubic metres with a 163 cubic metre slop tank.. Ballast tanks will accommodate 2000 tons. Other tankage includes: fuel; 240 tons, fresh water; 60 tons, lube oil 226 cubic metres, Propulsion power is provided by a MAK 6M25 rated for 1800 kW at 750 RPM turning into a Rolls Royce 3:1 gear. Main electrical service to the vessel is provided by a pair of 304 Kwe, 50 hz Cummins Marine Auxiliaries ( CMA 304/5 HX) each powered by a Cummins KTA19 D(M1). Limited harbour needs are met by a single CMA80/5 HX (80KWe/50hz) powered by a Cummins 6BT5.9 D(M), while emergency backup service is provided by a CMA80/5 RD also powered by a Cummins 6BT D(M).
