202 Cheoy Lee Delivers Second Fast Ferry to Philippine Firm In mid-January, Hong Kong harbour saw one more fast ferry, but it was only there for sea trials having been recently launched at the Choey Lee Shipyard for Socor Shipping Lines in the Philippines. The 32 by 7.14-metre mono hull, Ocean Jet 5, follows a sister ship Ocean Jet 3, delivered in September 2001. It will, in turn be followed by Ocean Jet 6 in February 2003. The two later vessels differ from the first only in a slight reduction in passenger capacity from 296 to 287 passengers. All three vessels are powered by a pair of Cummins KTA50 M2 main engines developing 1800 HP at 1900 RPM. The engines turn propellers through ZF model BW 4650-A marine gears with 2.5:1 ratios. This combination gives the boat a 30-knot light ship speed and 28-knot loaded speed. Tankage is provided in the LL hull for 5000 litres each of fuel and water. The vessels are classed by Bureau Veritas and built to a design by Mark Ellis Marine Design of Fremantle Australia. Delivery of these all aluminum vessels signals the increasing presence of Cheoy Lee in the fast ferry market. Cummins engines, having long dominated the demanding Gulf of Mexico crew boat market, are enjoying wide acceptance in the US fast ferry market. Now the Ocean Jet series of boats, and other recent deliveries, are signalling a growth in the Cummins share of the Asian fast ferry market. For further information contact: Jonathan Cannon 575-551 |
