Tennessee's Serodino Shipyard Busy with Push Boats

In late August this year, Serodino Shipyard at Chattanooga Tennessee delivered one of their popular Tiger Class 1200 HP Dinner Bucket Switchboats to the Jeffrey Sand Company of Little Rock Arkansas. Named the Chis M, the new boat was delivered from the Serodino yard on the Tennessee River up through the Ohio River system to the Mississippi on route to Little Rock. The shipyard now has another of the Tiger Class under construction to be available for order.

The following description of the vessel is provided by the shipyard:

DINNER BUCKET SWITCH BOAT

Hull - The 51'6" x 22'6" x 7'6" hull, with 5'6" draft, is constructed of 3/8" plate throughout, with 1/2" plate over the wheels and on the bilge knuckles.

Transverse framing is 7" channel on 24" centers with 3" x 5" x 3/8" frames in the bow. The inside motor mounts are continued fore and aft as solid sheets to divide the hull into three collision compartments, three fuel tanks, engine room, a water tank and six stern compartments. A 165-gallon lube oil tank and a 110-gallon hydraulic tank are built into the hull.

Power - Stock power is two Cummins M-19, developing a total of 1200 continuous horsepower at 1800 rpm, with Twin-Disc 5222DC reverse and 4.03 to 1 reduction gears turning 4-1/2" shafts and 52" x 40" four-blade Nibral wheels. Two 40-k.w. Cummins 4B3.9 light plants furnish auxiliary electric power.

Steering - The follow-up lever controls in the pilothouse separately activate four flanking and two main rudders. The hydraulic pumps are driven by the main engines.

Miscellaneous - Standard equipment includes navigation lights, one incandescent and one Xenon searchlight, Morse engine controls, all-alarm systems, electric winches, rubber townees and Fernstrum coolers. In effect, the vessel will be delivered 100% operational.

Superstructure - The superstructure is constructed of 3/16" plate with 2" x 2-1/2" x 1/4" framing. Doors are metal and windows are aluminum with safety glass panes. All quarters are insulated, paneled, heated and air-conditioned and have vinyl floor covering and curtains.

The first deck is 15' x 23' and contains Spartan quarters consisting of a combination stove, sink and refrigerator; bunk beds that fold into a couch; and a modest head with shower and a U.S. Coast Guard approved marine toilet.

The second deck is 8' x 8' and contains bunk beds. The pilothouse is the same size with full instrumentation and vessel control. Eye level is 24'.
