Curry Marine Carries on Tradition of Service

Short of losing the boat, a fisherman's worst nightmare is losing his main engine at the beginning of a big opening. But that is what happened to Joe Hamm when the engine, with less than 9,000 hours, on his 73x26-foot mid-water trawler the Chellissa blew up on June 15, just at the start of the west coast hake season. He got towed in to port and went back to see the outfit that had sold him the new engine less than three years ago. They weren't very helpful so he turned to Curry Marine, a company long known for owner Tom Curry's ability to get thing right for fishermen.

Tom had just gone to concentrate on his marine survey company and was turning his engine business over to Scott Graff and Terry Wheeler, both well known for their work with Cummins Northwest out of Seattle. "I'd never met Scott before," says Hamm, "but just like Curry, he was really helpful. The boat had a Cummins in it for 20 years before this last engine and now we are going back to Cummins."

Graff got Hamm a Cummins KTA38 M0 rated for 850 HP at 1800 RPM. It fit the Twin Disc TD5202 gear from the blown engine. As of June 26 the installation was going well and Hamm expected to be back on the grounds by July 4, in time to catch the last couple of weeks of the hake season before going north to Alaska where he will fish pollock and cod.

There is not a lot of new construction in the west coast and Alaskan fishery these days, but what there is continues to take advantage of Curry Marine supplied engines. Such is the case with the 90 x 30-foot crabber, Controller Bay currently building at Fred Wahl's yard in Reedsport Oregon. The main engine in that boat will also be a Cummins KTA38.

Tom Curry's legendary attention to the needs of his customers, will continue because when he decided to sell the business, Tom didn't just put it up for sale, he looked about and chose Scott and his partner Terry Wheeler to take over the business and the care of his customers.
