McCall Continues Crewboat Leadership

Norman and Joe Mcall are continuing to work on behalf of Seacor Marine inc. of Houston Texas to maintain their commanding lead in crew boat size and innovation. Last year, their 165-foot Keith G. McCall, while not setting a size record, introduced the big V-16 Cummins KTA50-M2 engine to the crew boat world. This month, they will be commissioning, once again, not only the most powerful, but also, the largest crew boat thus far. Where the Keith had four of the 1800 HP KTA50-M2 engines driving jets, the new Granville C. McCall, building at Gulf-Craft in Patterson Louisiana, will have five of the big engines, each turning out 1800 HP at 1,800 HP at 1900 RPM for a total of 9,000 HP. The engines will turn variable-pitch Teinbridge 54x54-inch propellers through Twin Disc MG-6858 2.93:1 reduction gears. the four-blade crew boat style props have a .89 blade area to optimize load carrying while maintaining a relatively small diameter according to the Seattle-based supplier. A Thrustmaster 400 HP azimuthing bow thruster is powered by a Cummins N14 engine. The vessel is equipped with two independent stainless steel rudders and dynamic positioning rated ABS DPS-1.

At 190 by 35 by 14-25-feet (57.91x10.67x4.35-metres) this is a very big boat with equally large cargo capacities. The 112x28-foot (34.1x8.5-metre) cargo deck is capable of handling up to 400 Lt (406.4 Mt.). Tank capacities include: Drill/potable water, 80,000 US gallons; Fuel oil, 45,000 USG; dry bulk (deck tanks) 3,000 cubic feet; potable water, 2,500 USG; main engine lube oil, 500 USG, grey water holding, 6,000 USG; hydraulic oil 35 USG, sewage 428 USG and gear oil 125 USG.

Accommodation includes five crew cabins with a total of eight berths and one shared head and crew mess. Passenger bus class seats for 97 people with entertainment supplied by two 32-inch televisions, a coffee bar and food vending machines. Central airconditioning is provided by two five-ton units and heating units.

The vessel has a designed maximum speed of 26 knots burning 420 gallons per hours at 1900 RPM, cruising speed of 23-knots burning 310 GPH at 1800 RPM and an economy speed of 20 knots burning 260 GPH at 1600 RPM. Electrical needs will be met by a pair of Cummins 6BT-5.9-powered 99 Kw generator sets. The bulk compressor, a Leroi We 150 11M produces 80 psi with a Cummins 6CT8.3 engine.

The boat will be US flagged and classed ABS +A1, HSC Crewboat. Domestic Service +AMS. It is under US Coast Guard Sub-chapter T, small passenger vessel and Sub-chapter L, off shore supply vessel with flammable combustible cargo allowed on deck.

Commissioning for the Granville C. McCall is scheduled for the City Dock in Morgan City, Louisiana on May 21, 2002.
