165 Four Recent Deliveries To Newfoundland Fishermen Construction of fibreglass fishing vessels in Newfoundland set a steady pace in 2001 with a number of boats that were delivered having now successfully completed their first season. Two of these boats were delivered by the T.W.L. Enterprise yard in Trinity with another two by Universal Marine in Triton. The F/V Catalina Commander was delivered to Mr. Jack Sweet of Catalina Newfoundland in July of 2001. The 60-foot vessel is powered by a keel cooled Cummins KTA19 M rated for 500 HP and turning into a ZF W350 5:1 gear. The F/V Newfoundland Odyssey was delivered as a bare hull to Mr. Harold Butler of Brigus Newfoundland in October of 2000. Working with one finishing carpenter and his six man crew, Butler finished the boat and went fishing in May of 2001 This 62 X 22-foot vessel is the fourth Cummins powered boat for Mr. Butler. Powered by a Cummins KTA19 main engine with the M3 rating giving her 640 HP at the Heavy Duty rating and turning into a ZF BW161-1 5.38:1 gear and 5-inch shaft with a 4-blade 62x54-inch propeller. Fishing both crab and shrimp and working up to 170 miles offshore, the boat tows a Northesa 930 trawl at 1100 RPM. Given the increased value of the crab and shrimp fishery relative to cod, Butler says, "Fishing in Newfoundland has never been better. On the shrimp we take our 50,000 pound trip limit in two to three days." The F/V Lisa M. was delivered by Universal Marine of Triton, Newfoundland to Mr. Walter Drover of Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland in March of 2001. The 65 x 23-foot vessel has a 100 cubic metre hold capacity. It is also powered by an IMO certified keel cooled Cummins KTA19 M3 Heavy Duty rated for 640 HP linked to a ZF BW161-1 gear with 5:1 reduction. A 66x50-inch propeller is mounted on the five-inch shaft. The Collins Provider, was delivered from the same yard four months earlier, to Mr. Perry Collins of Seldon on Fogo Island Newfoundland. At 60 by 21.9 feet this boat has a 60 cubic metre fish hold. Fitted with the same KTA19 M3 engine package as the Lisa M but with the 530 HP Continuous Duty rating, the Collins boat has a 4.5-inch shaft and a 60 by 52-inch propeller. Both boats are rigged for trawling ground fish and shrimp as well as fishing fixed gear for crab.
