New Airport Ferry for Ketchikan

Alaskan Ferry

Alaska Ship and Drydock will deliver a new ferry to the Ketchikan Gateway Borough at the end of this coming summer. The ferry will take cars and passengers on the 30 minute round trip between the City of Ketchikan and the Ketchikan airport on Granvina Island. To be named the M/V Oral Freeman, the new boat is being built to a design by Kvaerner Masa, Inc. of Vancouver British Columbia. The 116 by 48-foot vessel will be operated by a two person crew and carry up to 22 vehicles and 147 passengers. The hull, formed from 3/8-inch steel shell plate will have a seven-foot draft. Main engines, a pair of Cummins KTA38 MO rated for 850 HP at 1800 RPM, will each drive independent propellers at either end of the boat. The engines turn 70-inch five-blade Troost style propellers through Twin Disc 5205 DC marine gears with a 5.04:1 reduction. The opposing engine can be engaged for reversing power when landing. Mark Cook of Kvaerner Masa, explains that it can also be used in reverse gear to provide additional power in an emergency situation. Tankage includes two 3964 gallon tanks for a total of 7908 gallons of fuel. Water capacity is 500 gallons with a 300 gallon tank for lube oil.
