108 Candy Fleet Orders Two Super Treats
Visitors at last December's Workboat Show in New Orleans did a double take when they walked by the Hamilton jet booth and saw the huge HM651 jet with its 25-inch impeller on display. "What is that going into?" was a typical exclamation. Actually four of the big jets are being installed in each of the two 170x30-foot hulls being completed for the Candy Fleet at Swift Ships Morgan City shipyard. Well respected for his state-of-the-art 145-foot series of crew boats, owner Kenny Nelkin ordered the two super crew boats as part of his over all build program which also includes a series of DP capable 220-foot supply boats for his blue-hulled fleet. The four big jets for each boat will each be powered by 12-cylinder Cummins KTA38-M2 engines rated for jet application at 1350 HP at 1900 RPM. "We sold the first of this rating for a crew boat application in the fall of 1997," says Marine Division Vice-President at Cummins Mid-South, Calvin Klotz, "Since that time the engine has earned industry wide acceptance gaining over 70 per cent market penetration for the horsepower range. As of May 2000 we have sold 113 of them." Auxiliary power of the boats will be provided by two Cummins 6B5.9GM-powered 50 Kw gen sets. Cargo capacity on the boat's 105x24 foot aft deck will be 200 long tons. Tankage includes 5,800 gallons for ship's fuel, 17,000 transferable fuel, 24,800 transferable potable water, 1,230 fresh water as well as 720 gallons for sewage and 12,200 gallons ballast.
